Peter D. Sudler

​Peter D. Sudler is the Chairman and CEO of Sudler Companies. After serving as Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of New York for 12 years, he has been leading the firm for more than thirty years, carrying the business into its third generation of family management.

Founded in 1907, Sudler Companies has distinguished itself as a premier family-run real estate organization with a national footprint growing out of a strong local base. Peter D. Sudler is the third generation of Sudlers to helm the company.

The firm started as a contractor for restaurant renovations, then moved into building stores and warehouses for lease to Montgomery Ward and others. This was the beginning of the business model that Sudler followed for the next century—developing and owning facilities to serve the growing logistics industry. Headquartered in Chatham, N.J., the company has holdings in 14 states specializing in Class A business and industrial logistics parks. 

Since joining Sudler in 1986, Peter put his distinctive stamp on the company. Among the innovations he introduced were purchases of large undeveloped parcels to create a multi-generation land bank; organizing local holdings into distinctly marketed regions; and creating a national network of holdings in multiple asset classes. Recently Peter drove the company’s shift away from office holdings, demolishing more than 700,000 square feet of functional office space and replacing it with state-of-the-art industrial facilities.  

Sudler typically self-funds construction of new assets and places permanent financing conservatively—a hallmark of Sudler that has allowed it to weather and even flourish in economic downcycles. The Sudler team represents a fully-integrated management model with in-house construction, finance, development, legal and leasing departments. 

Peter’s sons Brian and Daniel, a Green Beret and former US Marine, are expanding the Company’s holdings with land acquisitions in South Carolina and Florida that will add well over 4.5 million square feet to Sudler’s national portfolio—with much more to come. These new projects feature state of the art eco-friendly methods that place Sudler among the leaders in sustainable development. Peter has a daughter, Elizabeth Sobel, who earned her law degree at NYU and has worked at Sudler in the past. She is currently busy raising four young children.

Peter attended the University of Virginia, graduating with honors in 1969. He obtained a Juris Doctor degree from New York University School of Law in 1973. It was at NYU Law where Peter met his wife of 44 years Eileen FitzGerald Sudler who has served as the firm’s General Counsel for over 25 years.

Mr. Sudler has served as Commissioner of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, a Trustee of NYU School of Law, and in numerous philanthropic positions. He had a noteworthy career as an Assistant US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, where he prosecuted several high-profile organized crime cases and the Studio 54 tax evasion trial, the subject of an HBO documentary.  

Sudler has come a long way since its humble beginnings 114 years ago, and shows no signs of slowing down. The past 35 years, under Peter’s leadership, the company has achieved a stellar reputation in the industry. With Peter’s guidance, the next generation of Sudlers is poised to take the company to new heights, never forgetting the principles of integrity, hard work, and creativity that has gotten it this far.
